VERY SLOW

Postby woodside » Tue Oct 06, 2009 9:29 pm

My site has been getting slower & slower over the past couple of days. It's almost unusable today. Any suggestions?

I have added poll to your post so that we can get feedback from everyone. It is true that our system was at high load when we installed Mahara for everyone but after that all services resumed to normal and all our logs seems ok.

I would appreciate if you could give us specific time when your site is slow.

I have noticed the same thing over the same time period (especially 6 Oct, afternoon and evening UTC-4). It takes almost a minute to post a comment and grade change to a quiz. It has become basically unuseable for some purposes.
Until this slow period, we have been most happy with Key To School's hosting. Thank you!

We found some issues with our implementation of Mahara. We have stopped Mahara and are working to fix it.

Moodle should be working fine now. Please verify.

Moodle seems to be back up to speed today, 7 Oct, afternoon. It hasn't been 100% consistent--usually very good speed, occasionally medium speed, but nothing like it was yesterday. I am also impressed and pleased with your quick attention to these needs. Thank you for the great service you make available to us smaller users.

Go to Site Administration > Server > Debugging and enable performance info.

Now you will see some stats similar to following.
0.393349 secs
RAM: 7MB RAM
peak: 7.2MB
Included 296 files
Load average: 5.07
Record cache hit/miss ratio : 8/0

Refresh your Moodle site (any page you feel is slow) multiple times and give us the above output. This will help us troubleshoot better.

As of what our logs and stats indicate, Moodle should not be running slow at all.

We made some major changes in system in last few days. Please give your feedback on the topic.

Change made

* Added one more layer of caching (Memcached).
* Pushed all PHP code in RAM drive
* Made changes in parameters of APC
* Improved connection pooling for DB
* Reduced table_cache variable of MySQL.

Moodle is running very slow again for the past week or two. At first I thought it might be my connection, but other sites are loading fine. I'm not sure if it started after the latest Moodle update or not. I followed your instructions for enabling performance info. Here are a few of the data (I don't know what they mean, but perhaps you can decipher it):

7.964924 secs RAM: 7.3MB RAM peak: 7.5MB Included 318 files Load average: 5.44 Record cache hit/miss ratio : 0/0
23.29662 secs RAM: 3.4MB RAM peak: 3.8MB Included 133 files Load average: 6.72 Record cache hit/miss ratio : 0/0
13.783937 secs RAM: 9MB RAM peak: 9.2MB Included 411 files Load average: 6.16 Record cache hit/miss ratio : 0/0

Yes, from last few days we are doing a lot of testing for a new feature on KTS. We estimate 4 more days of work.

Yes jaigupta, Moodle has been very slow recently, hopefully normal performance will return after the testing of your new features.

I'm happy to finally understand why it's sooooo slow these days. Hope it will get back to normal soon!

Regarding this, I have a question about the time the system takes to deliver emails. Some users (including myself) have noted that for the last few days, when a message is posted on a forum (and sent immediatly), as well as instant messages transfered by mail, it can take up to 2 hours (and more!) to get it in our inbox.

I tried to activate the cron manually, and I never saw in the log that any messages were sent to anyone.

Is this due to your new feature testing?

School is starting again and I'm a bit worried...

Thanks!

Jai, I know you said earlier this week that you were testing new features and that it would be slow for a couple of days... but it seems like it's getting slower and slower.

This morning, during my class, students were getting a «Database connection failed» error (I got it too) when they tried to access the course (it's been like that for 3 hours already). See file for error screen capture.

Is this error related to your tests? Is there something I can do as an admin to help my users?

Thanks,

Elise

It seems better!

But I haven't tried it during class, so I don't really know. I'll post again if there's a problem.

By the way, I'm still waiting for an answer to my "problem with hotmail" post (in general problems). It's THE biggest issue we have right now and I really need help on that.

Thanks!

Periods during the day when updating a file is so slow - are there any performance tweaks that can be implemented? Are there any maintenance checks? What are the do's and dont's to improve performance?
thanks in advance

Do you mean uploading files or something else?

For Moodle settings see this performance guide

I have found the Moodle really slow since I first started using it. Often waiting 10-15 seconds between page refreshes. It is now substantially faster since switching off Statistics and not keeping logs for as long!

Not sure why, but it works for me

There is lot of stuff going in background. We have recently upgraded hardware which is giving boost :)

Statistics and logs would definitely help if your site has lot of courses and activity.

Thank you for providing server space for my learning environment.
The side is very slow. It started around 3 weeks ago (last big update of whole site). Is there a way of returning to the old speed?

Hi Jai,
I have also found the site to be very slow in the last few days, often timing out because it was taking too long to make a connection. :(

Hi Deborah,

Yes, sites were slow in past days. Problem was backup server, it started to backup multiple copies simultaneously.

Do you feel site is also slow today?
